Recently I had the pleasure of shooting at a fundraising Gala for the Tema Conter Memorial fund. It was attended by representatives from multiple EMS and fire services.
I had basically no time to set up and had to fly by the seat of my pants. For the initial ceremony I used my Alien Bee 800 bounce off of the roof as well as my Canon 430EZ fired for opposite fill. I shot in manual and ISO 800. I set the lights to have an f of around 5.6-8 so I had some play.

Afterward, while speeches were underway, I set up my Bee with a 10 degree grid spot aimed at the stage like a spot. It was then a simple matter of nice slow shutter speeds to bring in some ambient light for nice dramatic lighting shots during some emotional speeches.

Finally, I set up a simple one light umbrella for some quick portraits. These would have worked better if I had focused on the shoulders up and had a less busy floor to shoot on.
