Bench Promo Shoot

On Sunday February 13th, I was invited to shoot customers at the Bench store for a Grammys promotion. The photos are on the Bench Facebook page where people can "Like" their friends photo and they can win a Grammy prize package.

It was a really great time. I think the staff at the store had more fun with it than anyone.

Making of a photo.

This photo that was taken in a back alley in Havana, Cuba, has become one of my all time favorites that I have taken. The rich colors and dynamic range along with the leading lines and unbalanced foreground make for a very interesting photo.
Here is the finished photo. Look at it full screen to really appreciate it. The .tiff file for this photo is over 100mb!
See how humble this photo's beginnings really were after the jump

Viva Cuba

Once again, photos that I have had kicking around for a long time without posting. These photos were taken on a trip to Cuba in 2010.

This is one of my all time favorite photos. I will post soon on how I made it.

Barricade

This group of photos is a select few that I shot for a professional wrestler in Edmonton. His name is David Mercer and he goes by the stage name "Barricade"
The idea of this shoot was basically to give him some promotional photos for his promoter, however, my favorite shots from this shoot were some of the more candid shots.

Seattle

I was looking through photos of a trip I took with my wife to Seattle in August and I figured I should post some. It is pretty easy to be inspired when you are in such a beautiful city. I know that a bunch of these will look suspiciously like your average "tourist shots", but I think I have some neat photos in the bunch.

The above photo is of a busker tuning his guitar on post street in the Pike Place Market.
I take a lot of pride on my black and white conversions. I worked this photo to give the lights a nice glow before fine tuning the contrast. I use both photoshop and lightroom in these conversions as they both do different tasks better that the other.

Engagement photos.

Sorry for not posting in so long.
Here are some photos that I took of some friends that are getting married soon. We shot these around downtown Edmonton in January.

I have been getting a lot of interest from couple about wedding photography lately. I have booked several dates and am available for many more. If you are interested, please don't hesitate to contact me at alex@alexcampbellphotography.com or call me at (780)995-0602.

High Dynamic Range

The following photos are made using a technique called HDR or "high dynamic range."
This process is done in post production and is used on photographs where there are too many tones to capture in a single photo. The software I use is called Photomatix Pro. It is actually a free program and is great to experiment with.

This technique creates kind of a surreal look to your photos. It is another reason to always shoot RAW format.

Winning Photo in international contest!!

Last year I entered a few photos in the Photolife Images International Photo contest. Out of tens of thousands of entries, I was fortunate enough to win 9th place in the People category. Here is the winning image.

I took this photo in Canmore in August 2009 while volunteering for KCCFA. Watch for it in the upcoming issue of Photolife magazine.

These shots were of a family that was photographed near the Shaw conference center in the scenic Edmonton river valley. The light was dropping fast and I used some creative lighting to make the best
of the situation.

Wedding photos

These are some shots of a wedding that I shot in September 2009. The location was beautiful with autumn leaves and a stream on the property.

Car photos

In Sept 2009, I went with my fiances family to Radium for an annual car show. I popped up a few lights and ended up with some very neat shots. All of the cars there were pretty unreal.

Recently I had the pleasure of shooting at a fundraising Gala for the Tema Conter Memorial fund. It was attended by representatives from multiple EMS and fire services.
I had basically no time to set up and had to fly by the seat of my pants. For the initial ceremony I used my Alien Bee 800 bounce off of the roof as well as my Canon 430EZ fired for opposite fill. I shot in manual and ISO 800. I set the lights to have an f of around 5.6-8 so I had some play.

Afterward, while speeches were underway, I set up my Bee with a 10 degree grid spot aimed at the stage like a spot. It was then a simple matter of nice slow shutter speeds to bring in some ambient light for nice dramatic lighting shots during some emotional speeches.

Finally, I set up a simple one light umbrella for some quick portraits. These would have worked better if I had focused on the shoulders up and had a less busy floor to shoot on.
